Audio recording and speech-to-text transcription run locally on your iPhone using Apple's on-device Speech framework. Your recordings, their transcripts, and the requirements documents you generate are stored only on your device, encrypted at rest via iOS Data Protection.
Spec is usable with no account. To generate a document, the app authenticates with an anonymous, device-generated identifier — never your name or email. If you subscribe to Spec Pro, Apple processes the payment (we never see your card details); to confirm and honor your purchase, the signed App Store transaction is verified on our server and we store an entitlement record keyed to a device-generated token. We also collect standard crash and performance diagnostics, not linked to your identity. We never sell your data or use it to train AI models.
When you tap Refine, the transcript text (never the audio) is sent over an encrypted connection to our AI provider, Anthropic (Claude), solely to rewrite it into your requirements document. It is processed for that request and not stored by us, and it is not used for advertising or model training. Refinement requires an internet connection; recording and transcription do not.
The app accesses the microphone only while you are recording, and uses on-device speech recognition only to transcribe what you record. Nothing is sent off the device for transcription.
Your recordings, transcripts, and documents live on your device; you can permanently delete everything at any time (Settings → Delete all data). Because your data is on-device, deletion is immediate and complete. For any privacy request, email [email protected]. We honor GDPR and CCPA rights.
